I bought this after seeing my parents' and after watching the painful set-up of my Sony Blu-ray with built in wi-fi. NO COMPARISON. Awesome picture. Great functions. Next TV will be a Samsung to pair with this Blu-ray. My Sony is now in the bedroom hooked up to a Sony TV (settings held during move so didn't have the painful set-up again). Care nothing for 3D, so went without it as I am not a videophile and 3D gives me a headache! Even not paired with Samsung TV, still great.

Watched many movies & it works great. Could be a little noisy if you don't turn the volume up while watching a movie. I heard from Best Buy employee that Panasonic blu-ray players are made better than Samsung. So, I bought a Samsung TV & a Panasonic blu-ray. If you buy the same brand name the remotes match up better so you can use just one remote. That wasn't a big deal for me, I wanted the best product. I have an older Panasonic dvd recorder and that still works great.

This Blu Ray player the (BD-E5300) is perfect for me! I don't stream movies via the internet (Netflix, Vudu, etc...) so I can't comment on how well is streams or if it freezes or not. I just use the player for my currect collection of DVD's and Blu Rays and let me say it plays them all just fine. The Blu Ray player upscales so good that it makes my DVD's almost look like Blu Ray discs. I also like the remote because it has an eject button and the remote can control your TV's volume and source. There is nothing wrong with this Blu-Ray player, it's pretty basic and that's all I need to play my DVD's and Blu Ray discs. Oh yeah, it has the "full screen" mode too, so just incase you have some movies that won't fit your screen, no worries this Blu Ray players takes care of that with that "full screen" mode option on the remote. No negatives about this player. I love it!!

My last Blu-ray was a two year old Samsung and for some reason it was not playing many of the newer Blu-rays. So I got a Panasonic (it was highly rated on Amazon) and it played the Blu-rays fine but there was an annoying flicker when I was streaming movies from Netflix's. At first I thought it was not that big of a deal but this was a brand new unit so I sent it back in thinking it was the unit but the new one did the same thing. My old Samsung did not have this problem so I got the newest model of the Samsung and it did the same thing as the Panasonic (flickering on streaming Netflix). By this time the flickering was driving me nuts and I even considered using my old Blu-ray player just for streaming Netflix. Then I thought I would give Sony a try and this unit did everything just like I thought it should with the Blu-ray features and streaming video (the Netflix down loads are 10 times faster on this Sony verses any of the other units I tried). I was not really up on the Google TV but it has been fun and easy to use (much like my smart phone). I have had this unit for several months and have recommended it to several my friends who were looking for a newer Blu-ray.

This blu ray player does exactly what its supposed to do. It has flawless playback of DVDs and Blu Ray disks. The netflix app works great and the hulu plus is good. I have never tried web browser but who needs one on a blu ray player.

The updates on this are very good. when u take it out of the box and plug it in,a screen appears and asks you to update the smart hub and the system. the updates go by quickly, allowing you to start using the device almost immeadiateley.

The wireless setup is also very easy. i had no problems.

Another great feature is that if you are using this device with a samsung TV, you will be able to control the volume and be able to turn the tv on and off using the Blu ray remote.
My only complaint about this Blu Ray player is that the remote is slightly laggy, but its definitely usable.

Also the device looks very good and is very stylish.

I received this from Amazon on Friday, and set it up on Friday evening. This was ordered to replaced a unit that was a couple of years old and cost $150 less. The old player was working OK but I was intrigued by the specs and hype for this player. I have a decent surround sound system (Polk top-of-the-line speakers) and a plasma TV (Samsung). The video: I have my TV set to Movie mode and with this player the video really does look like movie mode (at least more than the old player), I turned off the Chroma Process on the BDT500 because of way too much color saturation, and still had to re-adjust the plasma TV just a little lower (not much) for both color and contrast, and now the picture is great, better color than the old player and darker blacks, and great detail. The audio: I'm using the HDMI Sub feed to my receiver, and the sound took some tinkering too, I tried the sound effects but didn't really like the "tube amp" sounds, so they're turned off, I also turned off the analog sound circuit. I turned on High Clarity Sound which seemed to reduce the strength of the center channel a little, so I turned on the Dialog Enhancer, which increased the center channel a little bit too much (but more is better than not enough if you want to hear the voices). My speakers were balanced by the Audyssey feature of the reciever, and I didn't want to mess with it, but I decided to increase all the speakers by 1 db (except the center). It worked OK because this is the best sound I've gotten from my system so far. The only thing I'm having trouble with is the touch screen on the remote - makes me crazy sometimes (frustration), maybe time will help. This player allows so many adjustments to the video and sound that most people should find something preferable. I'm glad I ordered it and I think it's worth the cost. My home theater is improved.

This is my first Blu Ray player ever. I had researched on numerous brands and makes before I purchased the Sony S580. I had opted for the Sony S580 because of the brand name, affordability and built in WI FI. Overall I am not disappointed with the purchase. Set up was easy. (I am using it with my Samsung TV and they are playing well together). More built in apps than I know what to do with. Though I am using mostly NETFLIX, YouTube, PANDORA. WI FI connection is very reliable and the S580 is located more than 30 feet and through 3 walls from my router. I have an advice for anyone who would like to use DLNA function on this Sony S580 to stream/share pictures and music files from his/her Windows Vista PC. Don't bother trying to use Windows Vista Windows Media Player because Windows Vista Windows Media Player is not working well with Sony Blu Ray. (I can not speak for Win 7 since I am not running one). Use the free SERVIIO instead. It's available for free download and it works like a charm with Sony Blu Ray.

The BD-E5900 has many features but the audio is not making it through the HDMI cable. I've tried both HDMI cable versions (1.3 and 1.4) but only using the Coaxial Digital Output yielded audio.

The User's Manual states that the audio is indeed present in the HDMI cable, but it doesn't work for me. Item puchased from Amazon.

Firmware is version 1007.

Because of the above, I cannot recommend this product.

FOLLOW UP: After calling Samsung Cust Support, I was asked to do a "Hard Reset", but pushing and holding the Play/Pause button located on the BD-E5900 front panel. After seting up all of my personal setting, the audio is working fine thru the HDMI cable. I now would recommend this BD Player and would give it 5 stars.

I bought this as a companion to my LG55LM7600 3d tv. It's my second 3d blu-ray player, and it compares well to my first, a Samsung product. I hooked it up to my newly-mounted tv just 12 days ago. Haven't used the wi-fi yet...need to get a router. I've watched a 3d movie, several 2d blu-ray movies and some dvds. The 3d is fine, no ghosting, no trails, smooth motion. 2d movies are extremely sharp, but I don't know whether to credit the player or the tv for that. One thing that startled me was the picture I got when playing non-blu-ray dvds. Almost indistinguishable from blu-ray.
The player hooked up easily - they all do - and looks great, all slim and shiny black. One other thing: it operates much faster - much - than either of my two SONY blu-ray players. I'd recommend this unit.

This blu ray 3d player works well with my Samsung 55inch 3d led TV, it has so many applications to choose from not just the regular Facebook, Pandora, hulu and netflixs, but so much more.
One thing that kind of confused me was it said WiFi ready, NOTE the word ready, you do need either a adapter for it, or a wired Ethernet connection to make the internet portion work for this player, but that was not a problem for us as our router was right beside it. The menu options are colorful and the placer is touch screen and very responsive. Even the keys on the remote glow in the dark, and can sync with your TV. Thanks for another great Samsung product.
Oh it also comes with an extended 3 month warranty in the box on top of the regular 12 months when you register your product online with Samsung :)

For a name-brand DVD player that costs so little, I was amazed and delighted with all of its features. Blu-Ray disks load quickly and give me stunning images via my TV's HDMI connection. This player also quickly loads and up-converts my standard DVD disks to almost HD quality which is visually quite pleasing. I also like the player's small footprint and light weight. Since the TV screen menus and remote control are clear and easy-to-use, I don't miss the player's lack of front-panel displays.

For about the same total price as an entry-level Roku streaming video player, this DVD player also provides dozens of streaming video choices. I already have a Netflix subscription, so I was able to quickly configure this player to access my account and begin watching crystal-clear 1080P streaming videos. The initial set-ups requires an Internet connected computer, as will establishing accounts with other pay-per-view video sources if you wish to subscribe to them.

At this price point this Sony player does NOT offer Wi-Fi capability, but the best-quality, most reliable streaming video comes from a hard-wired connection providing at least 10 Mbps of speed anyway. When starting the video stream this player shows, on-screen, the speed of the Internet connection that it was able to achieve. This is useful for analyzing whether you want to configure your router to give this player a priority connection or let it manage the connection automatically based upon content.

In summary, Sony and Amazon offer a lot of value for the price with this player, which I highly recommend.

I really love this BLURAY player. It can play MKV files from any USB devices, DVD-R or BluRay discs that you burned yourself. It loads everything extremely fast. Easy to use. If you are hesitance of buying one then you are a fool and missing out THE BEST player out there.

FYI, when you're updating the firmware. If you're connected by HDMI then you should switch over to video composite because the player will reset to that and you will get a "no connection" message from your tv set. When you're in Composite you will then need to switch back to HDMI in setting option otherwise you will feel the need to turn off your player or feel that the machine is broken.

When you in composite video connection. Go to SETUP > PLAYER SETTING > OTHERS > select RESTORE DEFAULT SETTINGS to be able to use the HDMI conection again.

I've being searching around for a great Net streamer as well as Bluray/DVD player. I've tried many players from Sony (last years x80 series) and players from Panasonic including their new BDT-220 2012 player. The Sony S390 for me (and the equivalent S590) in my eyes are the best players out there right now.

Netflix has being drastically updated on the 2012 Sony players with a brand new user interface and support for 1080p/Dolby Digital + audio. Similarly the Amazon VOD app has had a update and supports Dolby Digital audio bitstream. HULU+ and Vudu are pretty much as they were on the 2011 Sony players, and work fine, although it would be nice if Sony move the HULU+ app from the PS3 over to this player. The iPhone app comes in handy for text input to quickly find a movie, or show .. but for whatever reason this feature does not work currently with Netflix or Vudu text searching.

Bluray and DVDs playback are great with awesome picture quality. No issues to report. No issues playing any DVD or Bluray disk I tried.

The main player interface uses Sony's Cross Media Bar and functionally works fine. Moving from app to app is responsive and not laggy. There's a new Sony Entertainment Network (SEN)"home" portal coming soon, which is suppose to offer a way to organize your apps using favorites, so that should be handy.

If you want a solid Network streamer and great disk player, I highly recommend the Sony S390 (and S590 which also supports 3D)

I bought this unit to replace a Panasonic BDT-310 that I was giving to my brother to upgrade his 3D qualities. The BDT-310 was a great player and when setup for 3D in the manual mode the 3D affect was spectacular. So seeing that Panasonic had a new model wth a new video chip I decided to upgrade both myself and my brother's units.
I am a former engineer and technically savvy. I read comments that people were having trouble with the new remote and problems with the wifi setup. It took about ten minutes to learn how to use the remote. I pushed the EPA button then hit start on the player and it connected perfectly. The picture is awesome and there are additional audio settings to play with. I found with my other player making adjustments to the manual 3D settings gave me a fantastic 3D picture when watching a 2D movie in the 3D mode. I am lucky that my TV allows me to adjust brightness and contrast differently for a simulated 3D, full 3D and regular TV viewing. This allows me to compensate and correct for the darker picture you get when wearing the 3 D glasses.

I wish that they had put disc eject feature on the remote, but that is a very small inconvenience to deal with to get the fantastic picture and sound this unit produces. I was watching a Tanning DVD and would have sworn it was a Blu-ray disc the picture was that good.

To sum it up, don't be swayed by some negative comments as the unit is fantastic. The people complaining probably can't work a microwave or taster over properly LOL.

We've been using it for almost a year and it has worked great. Great features and quality at a steal of a price. One feature that I like is that you can hook a USB hard drive to it and play VOB video files. Really convenient for your movie backups. This may be changed in more recent firmware updates though. It also upscales DVDs and other video formats very nicely. I'm not a videophile or Blu-Ray hardware geek, but I can't see how you're going to get better at this price point.

To echo all the other reviewers, this universal disk player is absolutely provides absolutely outstanding performance both visually and sonically. But, to add to the owner's experience, I would like to focus on the customer support aspect of Oppo. I emailed them on a Sunday evening that I was experiencing stuttering video on the LIFE BBC blu-ray disks (the Oprah Winfrey version). I was emailed back within an hour, ON A SUNDAY night, and advised to download a beta firmware. Since it was a beta firmware, I downloaded it to a USB drive and upgraded my BDP-93 easily using the front USB port (no fumbling behind a large AV stand!). I have downloaded official firmware upgrades seamlessly using both a wired and wireless network connection. The USB loading of the beta firmware went flawlessly (USB drive was recognized immediately with a beta firmware and uploaded by the Oppo-93 automatically. And, lo and behold, it worked! The beta firmware which also fixed a HUMAN PLANET BBC blu-ray playback issue fixed the playback issues with my LIFE blu-ray. Amazing customer service to email back on a Sunday night within an hour and provide the correct firmware upgrade. What are the chances a major electronics manufacturer such as Sony, Samsung, Pioneer, etc would be able to provide this?

Purchased the player several weeks ago. Very pleased with the product. Very easy to set up and connect to internet. The automatic software update process worked perfectly and quickly. The suite of applications it comes with is more than I could ever use. Netflix was easy to set up and access; works perfectly with no fuss. Remote is nicely designed and connectivity with LG TV is helpful.

The only minor glitch would be related to playing Blu-ray disks that I have authored using Apple Final Cut Pro X. Out of the box the player would not recognize the disk. It recognized the disk fine after software update. However, a week later it again failed to recognize the disk. In the end the only fix that worked was to unplug it, thereby forcing the player to go through its complete boot sequence. Has worked fine since.

Otherwise, quite a few features for the price.

I tend to line up with the professional reviewers who were very positive about the player. The consumer reviews were a tad less positive, primarily on usability issues: I personally had no problems at all and found it very easy to set up and use.

At this point, I have made the rounds. I first bought a refurb Panasonic BDT210, thinking the black flashes would be fixed. They weren't. Sent it back. Then, I ordered a Panasonic BDT220. Very nice player with great picture and sound quality, and excellent streaming. Problem was there was a soft, distinct, rhythmic, gulping sound when playing discs, especially with DVDs. Exchanged it for another. The second machine had wireless connection issues. Return it rather than face a headache. Heard really good things about the BDP S390 and 590. Skeptical at first since I have been a diehard Panasonic player fan. Hooked up the Sony. Smooth as silk setup with wireless. No problem at all. Zip, zip, zip. That made me instantly happy. Very user friendly. Quiet player too. Not silent, but no disturbing sounds. Then there was the picture quality. Wow. The Panny is great, but the 590 is photographic. Beautiful picture. Great sound as well. Quick disc loading (though the Panny may be an insignificant touch quicker). Excellent streaming with a fine picture (extra hi/HD even with wireless). Navigating apps is smooth and quick. Amazon's user interface could use some tweaking when it comes to search and selection, but I get my Prime movies with no issues. I can't comment on USB and external files because I don't use them. The PQ on this player along with the smooth and friendly user interface got me to such a degree, I ended up ordering a second one for my other TV. I'm very happy with how things turned out. It's been a long haul, but Sony gets an A+ from me on this player.

Please note: Updating the firmware on this player can take a few minutes. It's quicker when the player is hard wired. The player has to be turned on again after the update is completely finished. Also, Sony customer support was friendly, responsive, and helpful when I called asking about the update. :) Panny needs to improve the quality of their customer service. Rather cut and dry in my experience.

This is a great player for the price. Never had a Blu-ray before and I expected the setup to be more difficult. The built in WI-FI connected to our wireless network with no problems. I needed to do a firmware update, but it was easy and quick. Within 10 minutes, the player was registered with our Amazon Prime account and we were watching an instant video.

Blu-ray discs look great, but I expected that. The surprise was how much better our old DVD's look using this player.

I highly recommend this product.
